In our review, patients enrolled in all the included studies were mostly naïve or underwent a wash-out of a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 1 year. In 2 studies, enrolled patients did not respond to previous treatment with supplements, topical minoxidil, and oral finasteride [57,61]. Only one study compared PRP to topical minoxidil, the current standard of treatment for FAGA. PRP induced only mild improvement in hair thickness compared to minoxidil, however, hair count in the PRP group was found significantly improved, suggesting an enhanced benefit from a combination of the two treatments [60].

A treatment session of PRP for hair loss begins with a standard blood draw from your arm. Topical minoxidil is a popular treatment for hair loss and baldness, but some dermatologists are now prescribing this medication orally. Doctors first used PRP in medicine in Europe in 2005, says Jeffrey Rapaport, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. According to a study published in August 2016 in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, PRP helped promote wound healing, often in plastic surgery, orthopedics, and sports medicine.

Side Effects and Complications

Other factors to consider are the field effect of PRP in several of the split scalp studies using PRP versus placebo (Table 1). The precise mechanism of action of PRP in the promotion of hair growth is still not completely defined. Li et al. (2012b) studied the effects of PRP on hair growth using in vivo and in vitro models. Thus, activated PRP is believed to affect hair cycling by prolonging the length of the anagen phase and preventing apoptosis and the catagen phase. A faster telogen-to-anagen transition was also seen compared with control mice (Li et al., 2012b).

Is it effective?

This article will use the terms “male,” “female,” or both to refer to sex assigned at birth. Other medical professionals oppose the use of PRP outside of its approved medicinal uses. For example, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the Arthritis Foundation (AF) strongly recommend against its use in treating knee or hip osteoarthritis (OA).

PRP is a well-tolerated procedure which showed promising results in males-only and mixed populations of AGA patients. Only a few studies have focused on the potential use of PRP in women affected by AGA have been conducted to date.

Blood plasma contains platelets, which are rich in growth factors that stimulate regeneration and cell growth. These factors trigger hair growth by stimulating the cells in hair follicles, prolonging the period in which hair actively grows, and even producing new hair follicles. Studies have shown that PRP treatment can lead to regrowth of hair for those suffering from hair loss or thinning. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) was described as a small volume of plasma containing higher concentrations of platelets than those found in peripheral blood and initially used as a transfusion product for treatment of thrombocytopenia.

A bundle of approximately hair was grasped between the thumb, index and middle finger from the base close to the scalp. The hair was firmly tugged away from the scalp, and the extracted hair was counted in every session. To evaluate overall hair growth, hair volume, hair quality and fullness, global pictures were taken in every session from front, vertex, lateral and back view. For all these reasons, we believe that clinical studies investigating the effectiveness of potential treatments for FAGA should be focused on populations composed only of female subjects.
